K-5 PTLW Launch

PLTW Launch modules engage students in open-ended problems as engineers and scientists through the application of engineering design, scientific inquiry, computational thinking, and modeling. As a result, students develop in-demand, transportable skills—such as problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and communication—that they will use for the rest of their lives on any career path they take. A solid connection to careers emerges for students as they become aware that the content and skills that they are learning are useful in solving problems in the world around them.

The PLTW Launch Teacher will:

  • Dispel common misconceptions about the fields of engineering, biomedical science, and computer science, as well as about the professionals who practice these disciplines.

  • Expose students to careers, which may include interactions with industry professionals through classroom visits, virtual industry tours, and exploration of biographical sketches of industry professionals—all of which add to their learning experiences.

  • Develop a growth mindset related to how the changing workplace requires lifelong learning, flexibility, and the acquisition of new employment skills.

  • Implement pedagogical practices and curriculum knowledge to engage students in authentic and diverse experiences in STEM

  • Expand and engage in professional learning communities to connect with other teachers, to further develop pedagogical content knowledge, and to share ideas and resources

The PLTW Launch Student will:

  • Develop in-demand, transportable skills such as problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and communication.

  • Build competency and self-efficacy through practice and application of conventional processes such as the design process, experimental design, computational thinking, data analysis, project management, and modeling.

  • Identify personal interests within the content of the modules.

  • Explore diverse career opportunities and the lives of people who apply STEM principles in their jobs as it relates to knowledge and skills developed within the modules.
